Greater Essences

In the beginning, Toan (Time) and Starfire (Existance) gained a sense of self in nothingness and worked together to create everything else. They chose to bring forth Nalatos (Emotion) and Rell (Thought), as they realized the two together were the manifestation of immortal self and awareness. Both would be needed to create any further being. Starfire decided to remove himself from emotion so that his judgement would not be clouded by it, whereas Toan chose not to put one over the other so that he could best relate with their creation.

Next came Trae (Conflict), Banell (Physicality), and Byzentine (Life), required to populate the worlds that had been created. Lastly, they created Diashen (Morality) and Shin (Death), both as control measures over creation.

When they were finished, they split Talos (Magic) and Thaos (Power) from themselves. The two had been given conciousness earlier when they had been recognized with Nalatos and Rell, but it had been easier for Toan and Starfire to alter creation with such major assets directly.

Lesser Essences

Byzentine split from herself Than (Healing) and Lunara (Soul).

Talos split from himself Fah (Fire), Liq (Water), Weh (Wind) and Terra (Earth). These are arcane magic.

Explaination

The energy of an Essence is directly intertwined into all creation, in effect being everywhere, but the conciousness usually confines itself to the immediate area of its corporeal form. The conciousness of the Essences is similar to a soul in that they posess personality, intellect, will, and emotions. Because of this, the conciousness is not perfect. The Essence can dissipate its corporeal form are rematerialize it anywhere it focuses its attention.

Usually, an Essence has a primary corporeal where 'personal' energy is stored and another secondary corporeal for day to day use, functioning similarly to an avatar. Some have a third corporeal that serves the same function.

The primary corporeal's energy can easilly be drawn from for use by the secondary, but is generally only used in times of great need. The primary corporeal can only be harmed by another Essence. Should the primary corporeal be destroyed, the Essence is reabsorbed by Toan and/or Starfire for the conciousness to heal and eventually reform while the Toan and/or Starfire control the energy. After the Shen Incident, most Essences have hidden their corporeal forms away. At reformation, the location of the primary corporeal was hidden from each Essence to protect them further. The primary corporeal is sometimes refered to as the true form of an essence.

The secondary corporeal can be harmed by mundane means depending on how much power the body is currently harboring. The Essence can repair the secondary corporeal, so while the secondary corporeal can technically be 'killed', there is not much of a setback involved.

Notes

Descriptive paretheses are explained in depth on each Essence page.
